About Us
We’re a small group of local volunteers, wanting to start a bigger and more vibrant market in Battle.
Some of us remember the 1980’s market days before the Jempsons and Library buildings were built, the open-air market was big, really busy, with a cheerful atmosphere. With your help we’d love to rekindle that spirit.
Isn’t there a market already?
Well, yes, there are market stalls in Market Square some days of the week, but numbers have sadly dwindled over the years. We’d love to see more people supporting them of course, for example now that Battle’s fish shop has gone it’s great to see the previous fish guy back in Market Square on Tuesday mornings. Give the local man some trade!
How did the idea start?
The idea for a larger market was first mentioned at a Battle Assembles meeting in 2025 but nobody in that group had much experience so we decided to start small by running the monthly “Growing Network” events at the Almonry; these have been well received over the past year and we’re still continuing with them, but having gained some experience and grown our volunteer team, we’re ready to start something bigger.
We’ve done lots of research, mainly by visiting thriving markets in neighbouring towns and villages. It’s hard work but we believe it’s worth pursuing. After all, Wikipedia calls Battle a Market Town!
How can I help?
Shopping at the market is the best thing you can do. Simple!
And tell your friends of course. We still have a few ideas in the pipeline which we weren’t able to do on day one, for example a cookery demonstration. We’re still looking for a fruit & veg stall if you know anyone that could help there.
Of course if you’d like to get a bit “hands on” with the project then we’re more than happy to chat about that, having a few more people onboard would be awesome.
